Abstract

We report a rare case of tuberculous spondylitis after lumbar percutaneous vertebroplasy (PVP). A 76-year-old female who underwent L1 PVP 6 months earlier, due to a pedestrian traffic accident, presented with intractable back pain, which started 1 month before presentation. On imaging studies, severe spondylitis and paravertebral abscess formation were revealed. We performed anterior resection of infected tissues including corpectomy of L1 and interposition of strut graft. Histologic examination of resected tissue confirmed diagnosis of tuberculous spondylitis. We recommend careful examination and antiseptic preparation before PVP and kyphoplasty to prevent the development of an infectious disease by a locus minoris resistentiae, probably by reactivating an inactive tuberculous lesion.
